Four short courses aim to broaden your knowledge and understanding of key psychological constructs and concepts that are very relevant to producing high performing coaches of teams, players and athletes. The four modules are designed to engage coaches in critical reflection of how they create adaptive learning environments that get the best from themselves and others.

Course Description

Sport is a forum for getting to understand yourself a bit better. How might you describe how you typically behave? Are you quiet and reserved or do you like to be the centre of attention? How would you describe how your best athlete behaves? Is there such a thing as a sporting personality ? This begs the questions - Is a particular sporting personality profile more likely to be successful ?  This course aims to enhance our understanding of oneself and others beyond traits. A deeper understanding of a person enables a better grasp of behaviours. 

Topics include:

  • Traits, Identity and Motives
  • Self theories inc Dweck's Mindset
  • Self Concept
  • Pygmalion Effect in coaching
  • Resiliency and mental toughness in sport
  • Perfectionism in sport

Learning Outcomes :

Describe and discuss the multi-layered understanding of a person 

Understand the impact of how they coach on players' development and performance

Course Description:  Why do you coach the sport you coach ? What motivates you to play your sport ? What drives you to be the best you can be? Understanding your motivation is important to you getting the best from yourself and enjoying your sporting experiences.

  • Motivational Climate
  • A, B , C of psychological needs
  • From rewards to endorsement
  • Autonomy supportive coaching style

To understand the poorly understood construct of motivation and to subsequently design motivational climates to produce high performance.
